Cheap Coffee Beans

If you purchase coffee beans that are too cheap, you may well be making the wrong decision....

It seems to make sense;

CHEAP COFFEE BEANS = more margin on each coffee sold

But we should introduce a couple of additional elements to the formula...

 

So while buying cheap coffee beans can seem to be the right decision, especially while trying to control costs, the end result may be not the desired one.

Also, consider the actual effects of the cost saving on a typical case of coffee. Lets say that instead of buying a very good quality coffee at say, £11 per Kg, you buy some cheap coffee beans at an amazing £4 per Kg.

Let's say each Kg of coffee beans produces 140 espresso coffees, which you make into Cappuccino's, Latte's, Espresso's, at an average selling price of £1.50 (just for this example).

Each Kg of coffee, whether premium quality or cheap, has generated you a turnover of around 140 x £1.50 = £210 (not bad by the way!!).

The cost per cup of the cheap coffee was around 3 pence, and the cost per cup of the premium coffee was arond 8 pence.

By buying the cheap coffee beans, you saved yourself around 5 pence per cup, on a drink which sold for an average of £1.50 per cup.

Consider this - spend the extra few pence per cup and provide your customers with a better quality, more pleasurable coffee, and keep them coming back !!

Premium = Uniformity / Consistent Size / Smaller and more regular shapes with no damaage, and no twigs !

Premium = Regular colour

Premium = Aroma is superior

Cheap = Over roasting to try and get flavour

Cheap = blend, Premium = single origin

Premium = the best espresso and crema

Premium = less likely to create problems with you equipment
